Kelly Bike Commute Update
Kelly Bike Commute Completes Mile 5000
April 29, 2008
On April 29th 2008, Jeremy Kelly completed his goal of biking 5,000 miles in a year and in the process has raised over $150,000 of funds for the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation. This experience makes him realize that great goals can be attained if you just keep at it every day that you can. Interesting stats on his ride are:
Distance: 5,008 miles (equivalent of San Francisco to New York and back to San Francisco)
Time: 365 days
Calories Burned: 325,000
Beer Footprint: 365 * 6 packs of Corona!
Change in weight: 0 lbs
How: 313 * 16 mile bike commute (Mill Valley to San Francisco)
Bike wear and tear: 1 new backwheel, 2 punctures and 2 new tires
Injuries: Never came off his bike
Greatest bike support: His friends, Tom and Joel who would join him on the ride whenever they could
Low point: Biking home on a dark January evening in heavy rain - took a corner a little too fast and nearly lost it (closest he came to crashing all year)
High point: Having his wife Erica and his boys, Jack and Ben surprise him on his way home by meeting him on the Bridge.
Whenever he questioned getting on his bike (because of weather, feeling tired etc), his family was his inspiration - they make him realize how important it is to (1) have a great attitude and (2) make the most of the present. The Kelly family are very excited about the MDF. The launch of this much needed website for the Myotonic Dystrophy community is only the start in the MDF making a real difference.
The Kelly Family celebrated the end of the ride by hosting a party on May 10th at their home in Mill Valley to thank 70 of their friends who had supported the ride. A beautiful evening under the redwoods was a fitting end to this adventure. To read more about this extraordinary event, you can read Jeremy's blog.
