The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) Myotonic Dystrophy Assistance and Awareness Support Group (MDAASG) in collaboration with the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Neurology, St. Francis Medical Center (SFMC), International Myotonic Dystrophy Consortium-6 (IDMC-6), Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) and A Healthy Life For Every One (AHLIFE) presented a physician’s seminar and family conference September 28-30, 2007 in Manhattan Beach, California. Friday night offered a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program for physicians, nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals. John Day, M.D., PhD, Co-Director of the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center, University of Minnesota spoke on “Defining DM2 to Clarify the Underlying Cause of Myotonic Dystrophy”. Said Beydoun M.D, FAAN, Professor from the USC, Keck School of Medicine, spoke on the “Clinical Manifestations and perspectives DM1, MD2 and Congenital”. Saturday evening the MDA and MDAASG hosted an opening night theater fundraiser. Sunday at the family CME conference, Dr. Day presented “Understanding Myotonic Dystrophy’s Effects on the Brain” and Dr. Beydoun talked on “Clinical Issues in the DM Patient and the Importance of Family Participation”.
