Contact Your Members of Congress

Find your Representatives

To contact your members of Congress, please refer to the House of Representatives Directory and the Senate Directory. Those sites list their phone numbers and a link to their official websites, where you can fill out an online contact form or get the address of their local district offices near you.

Tips for Succeess

Your personal letter sends a strong message: I am a constituent. I vote. This issue is very important to my family and me. When contacting your US Representative or Senators, keep in mind the following rules of thumb:

  1. Stick to one subject.
  2. Be brief. Be factual.
  3. Get personal. Be courteous. Describe how legislation impacts you, using examples to support your position.
  4. Ask for action!
  5. Always include your return mailing address, whether in an email or a letter. Your member of Congress needs to know that you are a constituent!

Mailing a Letter

Please note: Do not physically mail letters or packages to your Senator or Representative's offices in Washington, DC. Due to security restrictions at the US Capitol, all sealed envelopes and packages will be thoroughly scanned and searched at least once. Your mail will likely not arrive intact. We strongly encourage you to call or email your members of Congress or send mail to their local district office instead.

When addressing a letter to a member of Congress, you should always refer to them as "The Honorable (Name)." Additionally, when writing to the Chair of a committee or the Speaker of the House, whether in an email or a physical letter, it is proper to address them as: "Dear Mr. Chairman/Madam Chairwoman," or "Dear Mr. Speaker." Your letters should use the following format:

Your name

City, State, ZIP
